Abstract

This paper offers an overview of Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control, highlighting its evolution from classical designs to modern, advanced strategies. The paper categorizes PID approaches into four main groups: integer-order controllers, fractional-order controllers, artificial intelligence-based PID, and data-driven PID controllers. It presents a path from traditional methods to emerging trends, emphasizing how recent innovations address the limitations of conventional PID controllers in dealing with nonlinearities, high-order dynamics, and system uncertainties. By classifying, analyzing, and comparing these approaches, the review aims to support researchers and practitioners in selecting appropriate PID-based control strategies for increasingly complex industrial systems.
