Abstract

In the present work, we developed and implemented a binarization technique for petroglyph images. This non-invasive and less expensive methodology is composed of a contrast enhancement algorithm, an anisotropic diffusion filter (denoising) and an edge detector. By applying this methodology, we successfully binarized some images of petroglyph of the Cueva del Diablo located at Manabí - Ecuador. The results of the developed methodology can be used to record the Ecuadorian archeological heritage and to perform an archeological and/or anthropological analysis.
