Abstract
This paper studies the effect of the electrification of mobility on the Galápagos Islands' electricity grid and the implementation cost. The energy consumption of land vehicles is estimated and predicted up to 2050 based on a bottom-up and top-down approach. Tourism is identified as the main driver for fuel consumption. The estimated electricity consumption is predicted on yearly, monthly, and hourly basis. As electrification of land vehicles are expected to increase the total electricity consumption by approximately 70% compared to 2022, the predictions form a basis for grid design. Finally, the cost of implementation and maintenance is estimated. The initial investment needed by 2040 is estimated at 263 million USD, while afterwards, a yearly cost of 26 millions USD needs to be taken into account to replace the electric vehicles at the end of their lifetime.
