Abstract

We outline an approach for obtaining the approximate invariants of the motion of a particle in a nonlinear storage ring. The distortion of phase space due to amplitude and chromatic effects is described by periodic functions in addition to the Courant-Snyder functions α, β and γ. The approach, which is complementary to others, is particularly useful at the design stage of the machine.
