Abstract
Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic continues to affect the country, but since July 2021 there has been a drastic reduction in hospital admissions and deaths. O bjective: Update the information on the pandemic and assess the impact on the total population and the pensioners of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute. M ethods: Ecological design study that includes the analysis of the main indicators of the pandemic, with information published by the Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador. R esults: Up to September 2021, Ecuador reports 503 101 confirmed cases of COVID-19; 51 % were males and a total of 32 305 deaths. The vaccination campaign has immunized 9 273 155 people and 10 710 127 received the first dose of the vaccine, meaning that 60 % ofthe population has been vaccinated. The excess mortality in Ecuador accounts for 70.807 people, since the beginning of the pandemic. Up to September, 3 of the 4 variants of SARS-CoV-2 of concern and 3 of the 8 variants of interest had been detected in Ecuador. Conclusion: The numbers of COVID-19 cases have fallen by 85 %, according to official information and the vaccination campaign reached its goal.
