Abstract

This paper presents the design of an insulin dosing system using a low cost embedded platform and actuator. The system can accurately supply doses of insulin in bolus and basal modes. Furthermore, the system employs an app to allow the user to calculate the correct quantity of insulin to be administrated for a specific meal. Basal and bolus dosing tests were performed. The basal dose tests consist of measuring the time between each time slot to check the amount of insulin delivered. Results demonstrate a satisfactory system performance. Moreover, bolus therapy tests shows how the system calculates the units of insulin needed to be delivered based on the number of carbohydrates ingested and how the system transforms them into motor steps.
