Abstract

A new distinctive species of Osornophryne is described from the Amazonian slopes of theEcuadorian Andes at elevations between 2600 and 2800 m. The new species differ frommost congeners (except O. guacamayo) by having elongated Toes IV and V, probably as anadaptation for arboreal habits. Osornophryne cofanorum sp. nov. differs from all knownOsornophryne by having its skull, vertebrae, and urostlyle coosified with the overlying skin,conferring individuals a squeletic aspect. Males have a unique color pattern of yellow pustuleson the tip of the snout, upper eyelid, limbs, and dorsolateral pustular clusters.Keywords: Ecuadorian Andes; Osornophryne; Bufonidae; Ecuador; New species.
