Resumen
This case report describes the successful management of polytrauma caused by shotgun pellets from poaching in a Mexican porcupine (Sphiggurus mexicanus). A comprehensive clinical evaluation, including radiographs, identified the presence of multiple internal pellets. An integrated treatment plan included fluid therapy, antimicrobial agents, analgesics, and surgical extraction of the pellets guided by a novel magnetic retrieval technique using neodymium magnets. This technique proved effective in locating and extracting steel pellets, offering a valuable alternative in resource-limited settings. The porcupine made a satisfactory recovery, demonstrating significant improvement in physical condition and wound healing. This case highlights the importance of a thorough evaluation, integrated therapeutics, and the potential of magnetic retrieval for managing wildlife trauma. It also underscores the need for further research on long-term effects and environmental considerations of releasing treated animals.
