Resumen
Traditional industrial production has generated severe environmental impacts, such as the overexploitation of natural resources, biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, and climate change. In response to this reality, it is necessary to transition toward new production models that integrate the principles of environmental and social sustainability, in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda, which establishes 17 sustainable development goals to guide global efforts toward a more equitable and environmentally responsible future. This chapter analyzes the shift to sustainable production practices as a strategic response to mitigate the negative impacts of industrial activity and promote economic development models compatible with environmental conservation. The content is organized around the definition of sustainable production practices and the key concepts associated with them—understood as strategies aimed at reducing environmental impact, optimizing resource use, increasing energy efficiency, and promoting social equity. By presenting successful case studies from diverse economic and geographical contexts, this chapter identifies the opportunities, challenges, and necessary conditions for the effective implementation of sustainable production within the industrial sector. Finally, it concludes that sustainable production is a fundamental pillar not only for the preservation of natural resources but also for ensuring the long-term economic and social sustainability of productive activities in any context.
